Who shops at Whole Foods?

March 4th, 2007 at 01:46 pm

On a board that is extremely frugal I was wondering who here shops at a natural/organic grocery story (i.e. Whole Foods) that is more expensive then say a Walmart or your local grocery store. I was just wondering how important it is for people eat health food despite it costing so much.

We don't have one around here. I think health foods are important, but so is having health insurance. Organics are so expensive that if I bought them for my family I would have to do something drastic, like drop my health insurance, to be able to afford them!
If a family makes enough money to afford the luxery of organics...great! Unfortunetly, it would put us in the poor houseFrown

We don't have a Whole Foods, though they are building a Trader Joe's. We do have a little organic foods store, a great big co-op and a couple of the grocery stores that have large organic sections, which has brought prices down a fair bit with . I buy some organic foods and some natural foods, usually produce and always milk and eggs. I will only buy wild caught fish, not farmed. I seldom buy organic meat unless it is on sale but I do buy meat with no growth hormones or solutions injected to "enhance" flavor. We've got a couple local farms that provide a lot of meat and poultry to the stores here so I think our prices are a bit better than standard for natural and organic foods.

I think about $75 of my monthly $250 food budget is spent on organic foods. If I could afford more than that I would. I think you just have to use what you can afford. Some is better than none.

I do have a large garden and garden organically so my food bill is much less in spring and summer for organic foods.

We have a Whole Foods (aka Whole Paycheck). With a price book so you can see the deals, and if WF isn't your main store, it can work, but I think that a garden, a farmer's market or buying a share in a CSA has got to be a better solution. It might not be rock-bottom prices but at least you have the idea that your money goes to the farmer.

WF seems twee - corporate and you just know you're buying the blond pine floors and the cutesy layouts.

If you have a trader joes or a local food coop store near you those might help balance the budget and the desire to eat healthier.

    I love trader joes.

When I lived in big metro area, I shopped at a Wild Oats. Although some things are a little more expensive, like meat, others are actually cheaper. For example, I could buy bulk oatmeal for much less than boxed oatmeal from a grocery store. Now, I buy things from a food co-op and they are also frequently cheaper, but my co-op is not always reliable, because things are sometimes out of stock and I don't find out about it until 2 weeks after I placed the order. I have ordered some things online if I could not find them anywhere else.

i do try to buy organic, but i agree that at whole foods you're paying more for ambiance than anything else. i shop at a local 'health food store' that's been around 15 or 20 years as opposed to whole foods. spices and bulk foods are equal or lower in price than traditional chain grocery stores, same for organic salad and spinach. and remember the tomato 'shortage' from fall and winter? they were a buck less a pound there than at the grocers.

organic canned goods and convenience foods are more expensive there than those available at the grocery store, so i usually don't get them there.

I shop there when I can't find something I want anywhere else. Sometimes I like to go there and browse just for the fun of it, too. I wish I could afford to shop there all the time, but...$$$$$

I stick to Trader Joe's myself. But the King and Queen of Debt over at www.wereindebt.com have a few posts detailing how they shop at Whole Foods and remain frugal.
