$192 gas bill!

February 17th, 2007 at 09:14 am

Ok I'm all for paying a little more for my utilities to keep my house warm in the winter, but seriously! $192 for gas? That is outrageous!

We were doing pretty good this past with $48 for Electric and $12 for water. This total screws up our budget for utilities, but we'll make it work! Looks like no food for a week now! Smile haha

Anyone else had high utilities bills? We only have about a 1700 sq ft house too.

don't feel bad. last year, living in a 900 sf rental house, my gas bill was $180 one month and $256 the next month. please bear in mind we kept the house no higher than 65 and had no other gas appliances, only heat.

as a result, i've told teh gas company to take a hike, and now heat my 1800 sf house with 2 space heaters and a woodstove. i can't imagine what my bills would be like here!

I have spent about $600 to heat our house for the past 4 months and we have 3200 square feet.

I just got a $160 electric bill and I heat my house with propane!

I live on LI and it is very expensive here. 360.00 for gas and another 180.00 electric per month and that is on the budget plan. My house is about 3600sq ft. I make sure that the heat never goes above 68 and that the lights are off when someone leaves the room.

Upstate NY, I have a 980 sq ft. condo and I am rarely there but have to maintain the temp. in the winter to at least 55 to keep the pipes from freezing. That cost is about 120.00- 180.00 per month. It is eletric heat which I find is incredibly expensive.

My last bill, which I am sure is better than what is coming, was $232 gas and electric. - 900 sq. ft. I am hoping to get insulation this year since there is none and the house is nearly 80 years old ( I have made some improvements on windows, doors, etc.). Perhaps I could turn down the therostat to 68 but when I look at the overall picture of 1-3% savings per degree, I guess I can live with an extra $12.00 a month to be at 70+ during the winter and not freeze my, well, not have to overdress in my own house. I am sure that getting the house insulated will make a HUGE difference and the thermostat change will be eventual - just not now. The relative cost of paying more now without and the outlay for insulation puts it in the dilema catagory. Cheaper now until situated with paid off CC.
Intersting tidbit - my parents had a bill from 1964 for a two story house - total February bill = $2.64!

    Me too babarb L!

Our electric bill was $120 and we heat with propane too, so I have no idea how much our monthly usage costs (for propane) are. We fill our tank up in the fall and hope it'll last all winter and spring. Usually it does, but we've had an extremely harsh winter so far so we will have to refill againFrown

We paid $271 for 2200 sq. feet.

Ours was up around $200 in January too. Hubby almost passed out...in the summer it hovers around $20 so a 1000% increase was quite a shock. Now we are looking at chaing the (gas) water heater for one of those on-demand water heaters and considering a wood stove for the lower level of our house (we live in an open-plan tri-level so the lowest level is always cold and the highest level is always hot and the middle is just right).

Like Ima Saver, I budget for my highest monthly electric bill. We've had a mild season until very recently, so I have a surplus to take up the slack. I'm expecting to spend about $100 for February. Apartment.

    Smile

Here's another "me too." Just posted about my bill being up 34% in one month despite new conservation. $223 for 900 square feet, one room of it closed off!
